Insideletter

Hi 👋🏻

You know that I am obsessed with newsletters. So I keep checking how people are making money and living with a newsletter business.

And there are around 10 people who’re very, very active on LinkedIn and keep talking about newsletters, you can count me among them 😎

Well, jokes aside, I found Manny Reyes as one of the top guys in the newsletter space. He has worked at Morning Brew. One of the biggest independent and business-focused email publications globally. With over 4 million subscribers.

Then he also worked in Growletter, one of the reasons behind the birth of Insideletter. Right now, he has been building Boletin Growth. But right now, he is building Growth Levers. Which consists of paid ads acquisition, ad creative and newsletter growth.

I also reached out to him for a newsletter podcast, but he hasn’t replied to me to date lol.

Today, let’s break down his new newsletter, Growth Levers.

Newsletter theme

As you know, I was very excited about Scale My List. Manny does exactly what SML was built for:

Paid ads acquisition → Newsletter growth → Monetisation

So it’s likely that he mostly talks about paid ads.

I picked one of his editions. Let me break it down for you!

Subject line

The subject line is a bit big and AI-written. Also, there is no pre-header.

But if we consider this as a pre-header, then it’s way too long, as ideal pre-headers should be somewhere between 3–5 words, not more than that.

But in the context of newsletters, it’s okay because it’s more of a TL;DR than anything else. You’ll see the same with Matt McGarry.

I used to write the same thing about what Insideletter is and why you should read it, but since people already know what Insideletter does, I stopped using it because it unnecessarily takes up space.

It’s similar to Matt McGarry covering what happened in the newsletter space. This is the curated section of the newsletter.

He also broke down the ads, whether they were good or bad, and why he chose them. That is the expert part of it.

As I mentioned, he is the Meta ads guy, which is why he specifically talks about Meta ads.

My verdict?

The subject lines can be a bit more quirky. Since he’s seen as an expert and a very serious type of guy, doing something he isn’t usually known for could attract more opens.

Also, since it’s a new newsletter, it’s fine to explain what Growth Levers is. But after a certain point, he should stop doing that.

Did you like it?

I think the categorisation Matt McGarry made with The Curator, The Expert, The Analyst, and The Reporter was absolutely amazing. But I think more and more people are now merging those categories, and it’s actually becoming a trend.

Even next week, you’ll see a new type inside this newsletter. Stay tuned.

Hope it was helpful! Thanks for reading! See you soon!
